Welcome to my blog, “Inside Apple Valley.”
My name is Brooke Edwards, and I joined the staff of the Daily Press nearly three months ago. If you’ve been reading the paper regularly, you may have noticed that one of the main beats I cover is the Town of Apple Valley.
Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Yes, it’s a BROAD TOPIC.
That’s where this blog will come in handy. I hope to open up a dialogue with members of the community who take an interest in issues beyond what can make it into the daily paper. I know there are so many of you who know this town far better than I yet do, and I want to hear from you.
Though I have roots locally, I am relatively new to the area. I was born at St. Mary’s and grew up in Big Bear. I got my bachelor’s degree in English, my teaching credential and a Masters in Education from California Baptist University. After teaching high school for four years at Rubidoux High School, I decided to pursue a career in one of the things I was teaching: journalism. And so I spent the last year and a half living in New York City, completing my masters at NYU.
It’s been exciting to return and see the explosion in retail that has happened in Apple Valley. I am anxious to watch this growth continue, as the town prepares to open its second movie theater, Best Buy and more.
However, it has been in getting to know the people of this community that I have found my inspiration. I look forward to getting to know many of you better, through this blog and through future stories.
If you have a question for me or would like to suggest a future topic for this discussion, please feel free to either post it here as a comment or e-mail me at bedwards at vvdailypress.com with “blog” in the subject line.
In the meantime, check back soon for my first posting and take care.

I want to know why the wont do anything about the dirt roads between our houses and why is it allowed for anyone to use them? the druggies and dirt bikes ride fast and they belong to the owners of the land and to the utility truck only.
The kids on the way to the bus stops cut through our land and even when its posted they still do it.
It is not fair that the Apple Valley ticket people go around a write a ticket for weeds on one house for weeds to high and not the other?
The dogs barking and unlicensed, the town dies not check on anything anymore just on the people they want to harass, But as for the easement roads the one in mind are the two between flathead and gay head on Ramona the people just use them like normal streets and there not they tear out of them every Thursday thru Sunday.
Sometimes even more and for us home owners it is not fair that we have to put up with the renters behind us doing it. can we put up a gate to stop the people from using the roads as driveways when the house they are renting is really on flathead not on hte access road it is causing a lot of noise and dirt to us and my asthma?
And not one owner can keep there cars clean when there kicking up so much dust, everything we own is getting covered with dirt from them it goes on all night long everyday who can we call to stop them from using these roads and driveways? sorry I can’t give you my name the ones who live in the house on those roads might hurt us so we must keep ourselves private for our safety
I do not think theres a resident here that has not made a report but the police will not help us with this. The drug house is the second house down on the right on flathead/ramona its a white house its the one in the back, they have so many cars back there and the city does not write them a ticket for a chop shop it amazes me to this day, but the druggies just keep coming and going like clock work. its a crack house and everyone knows it around here.
can anyone help us on this block of home owners on both sides of Ramona we are desperate for quiet and dust free cars and homes and can they put a speed sign out here to slow these jerks down?
thank you a home owner in need of help as with my fellow home owners…

What we need is an aggressive Town Council that seeks ways to legally restrict rental properties. While they adopted an “Inclusive Community” stance, what residents really want is an “Exclusive Community” program. Not to exclude folks by race, religion or gender but to restrict bums, parolees. gang bangers AND their families and associates from taking up residence in Apple Valley. This IS possible. Other communities are taking action, but it has to be a priority of the majority and they must be decisive and creative about it.
You want change in your neighborhood…get involved and elect people who want it too.

Hi Brooke,
I think an interesting topic for a future news story, and perhaps discussion on your blog is the absurdley slow progress of Cooley Construction on the Apple Valley Road improvement. There is no reason for the delay and slow progression of this project. Could it be that Cooley has no other ongoing projects and it’s few employees actually on site are dragging this out to keep the paychecks coming in? The costs are absurd for such a small project. What is going on and what, if anything is the Town of Apple Valley doing to prod this along?
